Tracy Kidder, one of my favorite authors, has written a new book, Strength in What Remains. He tells the true story of Deogratias, who arrived in the United States from Burundi in search of a new life. Deo survived the massacre of Tutsis and Hutus in Burundi and Rwanda in 1994. He landed at JFK airport with two hundred dollars, no English, and no contacts. He found a job delivering groceries, lived in Central Park, and learned English by reading dictionaries in bookstores. Then Deo began to meet strangers who would eventually change his life, pointing him in the direction of Columbia University, medical school, and a life devoted to healing.
This is a story about the heroism of an ordinary person, a story about a life based on hope.

Thanks Carol, this book sounds so interesting. I enjoy reading most any type of book. I need to get back to more reading instead of just reading so many blogs! :)
