Today was my birthday and I got to pick our destination. I chose Leavenworth, a quaint Bavarian village located in an alpine setting along Washington's Highway 2. In 1962, after the Great North Railroad relocated from Leavenworth to Wenatchee, the town's economy became sluggish. After visiting the Danish-themed town of Solvang in California, a committee suggested that Leavenworth could be remade into a Bavarian village. The idea caught on, and today Leavenworth is a year-round thriving tourist village. Arrive early, because it's hard to park!

We didn't buy any souvenirs, but Dave and I had a good time window shopping and taking pictures. After brunch at Cafe Verona, we walked all around the town and then walked downhill to the path along the Wenatchee River. Suddenly we were away from the mobs of tourists and enjoying the beauty of nature, along with the company of a few other nature-lovers.

After spending a few hours in the Leavenworth area, we drove back to our motorhome. We are parked at the Chelan County Expo Center in Cashmere, a few miles east of Leavenworth and a few miles west of Wenatchee. One other motorhome came into this park yesterday, and our two rigs have the place to ourselves. Sunday afternoon we will return to Wenatchee Confluence State Park for a few more days. 
Since we ate brunch in Leavenworth, we decided to eat dinner in Cashmere. It's my birthday, you know, so I can't cook today! We stumbled onto a non-fancy, but oh so tasty barbecue place called Country Boy's. Yummy, yummy food--we highly recommend it if you're in the area and like southern-style BBQ.

We rounded out the day by watching a DVD of The King's Speech. It was a great movie, and I can see why it won so many awards. Now my birthday is almost over and I can relax until next year, when I face the big 6-0 birthday!

ReplyDeleteCarol, you're just a kid! And sixty isn't hard to bear, especially looking back from 72! And in just a few weeks, I'll look back from 73. Suzy, of course, is looking up from somewhere closer to 39. We've heard about The King's Speech, and glad to get your recommendation. We'll have to find that somewhere. Thanks for sharing your day at Leavenworth -- brought back great memories.
ReplyDeleteHappy 60th -- sounds like you had a great b-day -- thanks for sharing your day and the beautiful town of Leavenworth. When it says "Southern-style BBQ," just exactly how did it taste? The sauce for NC BBQ is vinegar based -- we aren't too fond of that vinegary taste -- we like AR, OK & TX BBQ, which is more tomato based. Looking forward to more pics of the area.

ReplyDeleteWe live by a town in Kansas called Leavenworth home to Ft.Leavenworth and looks nothing like yours with snow capped mountains and such.

ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed Leavenworth. We've wanted to go back there during the winter sometime and see what it's like with snow on the ground. Never made it yet. Thanks for haring the pictures. It's a cute place.

ReplyDeleteWell, Happy Birthday a bit late!!! It sounds like it was a great day for sure ~ except maybe for that BBQ... we had our first taste of that type last fall when we were in NC to visit our son. We're with the peeps up above who didn't care for the vinegar taste!!
ReplyDeleteWhen we visited Leavenworth we parked right in front of that building with the blue mountain scenery painted on it!!! We traveled Hwy 2 all across from Glacier Nat'l. Park. That's a beautiful drive clear to .. Shoshone? I'd have to get out the atlas to check that! Somewhere along there is a restaurant that has bunnies outside that live under the cabins in the area. The restaurant (has the best pie in the world!) puts out their day old bread for people to feed to the bunnies. It's like a stampede of them coming when you get some and go out there!! It was so fun!!!
