Stub Stewart State Park

Yesterday I wrote that spring was here.  Today, winter is back.  It's rained off and on and it's colder than yesterday.  We decided to go for a drive this afternoon.  We took the car, not the motorhome.  First we went to Portland to locate the football field at Lincoln High School where Dave will be refereeing some Saturday evening semi-pro games. 

Then we drove west on Highway 26 and went to L.L. "Stub" Stewart State Park.  It's one of the newest Oregon State Parks and is located 31 miles west of Portland and about 12 miles south of Vernonia, OR.  The park is located in a hilly area and has 17 miles of trails for walking, bicycling, and horses.  The  paved Banks-Vernonia Rail Trail bike path runs through the park. 

Since the park is new, all sites have full-hookups with 50 amp power.  The sites are each 50 feet long.  There are two camping loops, West, which has 43 RV sites and 12 tent sites, and East, which has 35 RV sites.  All the sites are gravel, but the roads are paved.  The East loop has a very nice play structure for children.  We were checking for Verizon service at the park and noticed that there's a cell tower not too far from the park, so the signal was good. 

The park has a separate loop with 12 small cabins and 3 large two-room cabins.  In addition, there is another loop that is a horse camp, with 14 full hookup sites and 4-stall corracls and 2 double-size full hookup sites with 6-stall corrals.  Those RV sites are also 50 amp, 50-foot sites. 

The park also has a nice day-use area which has a good view over the tops of the trees on the hills.  The trails may be accessed from the day-use area.  Day-use parking costs $5 per day.
